Kusama was created in 2019, using Substrate, a building framework of the Polkadot ecosystem. It aims to function as an experimental sandbox for developers who want to build on the Polkadot blockchain. It supports parachains and other Polkadot features but allows developers to do more with fewer restrictions than Polkadot.

There are currently 9.6 million KSM in circulation. The maximum supply is not fixed. Instead, the network has an inflation rate of 10% per year. These new tokens are rewarded to KSM stakers. If the amount staked is exactly at 50% of the circulating supply 100% of the rewards go to validators, if it’s higher or lower than a portion of rewards goes to the Kusama Treasury.

Kusama, like Polkadot, was created by Parity Technologies. This company is run by Gavin Wood, who is also one of the founders of Ethereum.
